Just The Facts!

A Poke at Poker

Poker is one of the most popular card games played in both casinos and online gaming sites. The origins of poker are unknown although it is believed to be a variation of a Persian game called As Nas.

The objective of the game is to win the pot. The pot is the money that is set aside by each player at the start of the game and accumulates as the players increase the stake. Usually, the player with the best hand wins. The other alternative is to make everyone think you have the best hand such that all the other players fold and relinquish their stake at the pot.

Poker uses a standard deck of 52 cards. Although in some games, wild cards are introduced. A wild card is such that it can replace any card on the deck. The game begins with a shuffle of the deck, after which the deck is cut. Betting moves usually clockwise around the table. Order of betting is crucial and follows strict rules according to the type of game as these can put a player at either an advantage or to a disadvantage. For example, the player who bets first does not have information on other players' hand and at the same time, reveals information about his/her own hand. Conversely, the player who bets last is at an advantage.

In each round, each player can opt to 1) Check - this means staying in the game but will not be betting

2) Call - this means matching the previous bet

3) Raise - this means increasing the amount of the previous bet. Once the bet is raised, everyone else must match the stake or get out of the game

4) Fold - this means dropping out of the game and foregoing your stake at the pot

After the last round of betting, the remaining players show their cards and the player with the best hand wins the pot. Poker hands are assessed based on their rankings (see article on poker rankings).

One main difference from other card games is it is played against other players, and not against the house. The house simply gets either a commission or a percentage of the pot as its profit or a fixed amount per game.

A variation in playing poker includes high or high/low. Playing high simply means the player with the best hand gets the pot. However, in high/low, the players with the best and worse hand share the pot.
