What You Should Know About Limit Poker

Most poker tournaments nowadays are No-Limit Texas Hold'em poker variety, especially the big ones like the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour. There is no limit to how much money you can bet and the prize money can run into the seven figures. The opposite version, which is the Limit Texas Hold'em, is more popular among casual gamblers because it takes very little to lose.

One main characteristic of Limit poker is the structured betting, which means that a player can bet only a set amount with every round. The typical examples of the Limit poker game are the $3-6 and the $5-10 Limit games. On the $3-6 game, you bet $3 both before and after the flop. In these rounds, you can raise after a bet for only $3, for a maximum of four raises per round. On the Fourth and Fifth Streets, you can bet only $6 and raise $6 after a bet.

Many players prefer to play the Limit game because it requires very little money to start, depending on the blinds, and you can also buy back if things don't go your way. Since the bet amounts are limited, you don't lose all your money on a single hand.

If you are a little strapped for cash or if you have a small bankroll, the Limit poker game may be good for you. It is also ideal for beginners who don't have enough experience playing in competitive poker games. More experienced players go for No-Limit poker because they can afford to risk a large bankroll. However, Limit poker can still make you money fairly quickly.

In Limit poker, being aggressive will allow you to overwhelm the weak players and build your chip stack. Players with big stacks are more aggressive and make calls that are otherwise not possible with small stacks. Having a big stack will give you that all-important leverage to enable you to intimidate your opponents and push them around. But you have to be careful with an aggressive style of play as this can backfire against you.

Aside from being aggressive, playing conservatively and carefully will also reap dividends for you in the long run. Conservative play will make your opponents fear your hands and respect you when you join the pot. Combine this with bluffing tactics and you will end up a winner in the end.

Although the pots in Limit poker are smaller, it can save you a lot of money giving you the opportunity to play more games and gain more experience in the process. You should play in Limit games before you test your skills in No-Limit poker.
