Just The Facts!

Man Charged With Murder Over Poker Killing

A Greenwood man charged with shooting and killing another man during a poker game last year was found guilty of murder Aug 31.

58 year-old Freddie Edwards killed George Freeman with a gunshot to the head on July 16, 2005 after the two had an argument during a poker game at the home of the former at 707 Cokesbury St.

Edwards claimed that Freeman caused the gun to go off by grabbing a .357-magnum pistol that he was holding. Edwards was found guilty of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime according to solicitor Jerry Peace.

The jury took more than 6 hours before coming to a decision. The jurors agreed that Edwards was guilty after the rereading of a 45-minute testimony of forensic pathologist Dr. Joel Sexton.

"The jury made the right decision based on the facts," Peace said.

Edwards was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Cordell Maddox to 30 years in prison on the murder charge and two years side-by-side on the weapons charge. Under the laws of South Carolina, Edwards will serve the entire 30 years for muder.

Witnesses testified that the shooting took place after an argument over money during the game of poker. Edwards apparently made a rule in the poker game that anyone who folds out of turn will have to put money into the pot, according to reports.

When Freeman refused to pay, Edwards went inside the house and brought out the pistol, according to peace. Freeman then fell when he tried to run from Edwards. Edwards was shot once in the face as he retreated.

"It's just a tragedy for everyone involved," Peace said as he claimed that both men were decent people. "Sometimes you have good people who do stupid things," Peace said.
